One satisfied customer summed up the Relais Royal succinctly. “It’s more like a fantastic restaurant with rooms”. Quite right, except we’d just add the rooms are pretty fantastic as well. The whole place is, as befits an 18th century building that has been extensively renovated by master craftsmen to its former glory. As many original features as possible have been maintained – spectacular terracotta tiled floors, wooden French style ceilings, marble and natural stone fireplaces, and the Louis XIV nut wood doors, to name but just a few.
The whole place is just so romantic and the inner courtyard, garden with swimming pool and ivy climbing up the stone walls just add to the atmosphere. Now, we mentioned restaurant at the beginning and you cannot leave without dining in the hotel’s “Le Ciel d’Or” restaurant – traditional French cuisine at its finest and accompanied by fantastic service. The Hotel also boasts an arched wine cellar and a grand tour can be arranged at any time of the day. The other great thing about the Relais Royal is its location in the medieval castle town of Mirepoix, Ariège.
The Ariege area is considered by many to be one of the most interesting areas in Europe and the Relais Royal is bang in the middle of it. Fourteenth century galleries, St. Maurice Cathedral, Cathare Montsegur Castle and the world famous medieval castle town of Carcassonne, Limoux and its vineyards are just the starters. Oh, and Spain isn’t too far off either. But despite so much being on offer, you might just want to stay in and be pampered like Royalty. The setting is certainly majestic enough.

Mirepoix
Mirepoix, a small town of 3100 permanent inhabitants, is situated halfway between Carcassonne and Foix.
Its name was first cited in the 10th century charter granted to the inhabitants by the Count of Foix. Mirepoix is one of the main cities in the historic Cathar Country and is ideally situated as a base to drive around and visit all the impressive castles, abbeys and cathedrals that bear witness to this turbulent religious period, the inspiration of many authors, not least Dan Brown!
Monday morning is market day in Mirepoix, a great experience!
Mirepoix is famous for its cathedral, its market square with covered arcade and beautiful half-timbered houses and the famous Maison des Consuls with fantastic sculptures on its façade.
