Two initial things struck us about the Hotel Rural Son Granot:
Firstly, for a Georgian House built in 1712 it is actually a pretty funky and an up to date sort of place. In effect it's a historic hotel, boutique hotel, eco-resort and countryside accommodation all in one. But whatever you call it or think it is, people generally agree that it provides a superb experience.
Secondly, it is the sheer size of the surrounding area at its disposal. The botanical garden alone is over 10,000 square metres, whilst the total estate measures some 75,000 square metres in all. Space is definitely something that is not at a premium here.
We'll also have you know that Son Granot is the first place in the whole of Spain to receive the first rays of the morning sun, as it is located on the most easterly point of the most easterly island of the country – Minorca, one of Europe' most beautiful and peaceful islands where you can still find virgin beaches inhabited only by both the birds and a wide variety of sea life.
But we digress, we've already mentioned that the Son Granot is an 18th century Georgian style building. It comes with eight bedrooms, five of which boasting sea views, and three overlooking the swimming pool, the garden and the rest of the grounds. Two of these look out from the distinguished front façade of the building and have a terrace with magnificent views of the entrance of the natural Port of Mahon and the fort of La Mola.
Son Granot also has two suites with private sitting rooms and terrace, offering guests further space and privacy. These, however, are located in an outbuilding done up in the Minorcan style and surrounded by gardens. As befits such an idiosyncratic accommodation each room is furnished in colonial type furniture but unique.
Of course, the 21st century is well represented with air conditioning, satellite TV, stereo system, etc. It just happens to be well integrated with the 18th century sensibilities of the place.

Biosphere Reserve
"On the 8th of October, 1993, the island of Minorca was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.
The Biosphere Reserves are places on the planet where they are experimenting with the concept of sustainable development. That is to say, these are area where human activity is developed in a manner compatible with the conservation of the natural resources with the aim of ensuring their continuing existence for future generations of inhabitants and visitors to the island".
This declaration has been granted to 411 places worldwide where there a natural and cultural inheritance exists and where at the same time society has accepted an economic development compatible with the conservation of the environment. A Biosphere Reserve is a pact of cohabitation between man and his natural surroundings.
UNESCO considered that Minorca was worthy of this declaration for the diversity of its Mediterranean landscapes together with the animal and plant species unique to the island, some of which are in danger of extinction.
